The Importance of Good Grammar With Online Dating

What could be worse than being bad at sex? When it comes to dating, it’s hard to imagine anything hurting your chances more than that. But it turns out, bad grammar will kill your game faster than being lousy between the sheets. This is according to a new survey by dating website Plenty of Fish, which polled more than 2,000 singles about their biggest turnoffs.

Evidently the wrong use of “their, they’re and there” really gets singles fired up. When asked which of the two was worse, bad sex or bad grammar, the majority of respondents (58%) couldn’t live with subpar grammar. And it’s not just the written word. A whopping 83% of singles say they’ve found someone less attractive after having a conversation with them. But, on the bright side, 87% actually found someone more attractive after having a conversation with them.

It should be noted that this isn’t the first time that proper grammar skills ranked high among singles looking to mingle. A 2015 survey by Match.com emphasized good grammar as well. They found that grammar was more important to those looking for dates than the always-in-demand nice teeth and self-confidence.

So while this is a cautionary tale of sorts—mind your manners and watch your spelling when tapping out a message—it’s also inspiring. You don’t have to have great hair, perfect teeth or the physique of a male model to attract someone. Your true appeal comes down to whether or not you’re charming and interesting and know the difference between “your” and “you’re.”
